Picasa on the Mac … Kinda.

Google recently release a Picasa uploader for the Mac thanks to Ted Bonkenburg. Ted worked on this during his twenty-percent time at Google. Hopefully, this means Picasa for Mac will be out soon too. At least there’s a Linux version which is pretty cool. So far, I’m a bit partial to Flickr

Picasa Web Albums makes it simple to share photos with friends and family, and now we’ve made it even easier on the Mac. This new download comes with two handy tools for uploading photos: There’s a plug-in for uploading your pics within iPhoto.

Finally! However, I was hoping Google would release a complete version of Picassa for Mac, as an alternative to iPhoto. The Mac tool is not bad at all, but organizing photos with Picassa is much easier. Well, the plug-in is something, isn’t it? 🙂

    Antonio,
Thanks very much for the comment.

Having used Picasa on Linux, it’s a nice too but like a lot of other people, l have all my photos on my Mac (in iPhoto). Like you said, iPhoto isn’t bad but it would be nice to have a full blown app for the Mac. I just hope that Google decides to get release a full version for the Mac soon. Worse case scenario if you have a MacIntel box would be to get CXOffice for Mac from CodeWeavers.com and run the Windows version of Picasa through Wine. Not ideal, but it should suffice until a native version comes out.

    Cheers,

This is greta news… but it isn’t enough.

Google…. please please pretty please with sugar on top, release a Mac version of Picasa.

    iPhoto isn’t bad…. it’s terrible!

Organizing and editing photos is Picasa is SO much easier. And seriously nothing fixes up my photos like the “I’m feeling lucky button”.

I wonder if the Linux version of Picasa could be made to run on a Mac. Does anyone have any ideas?

    Hi Rod,
As I mentioned in previous comment, our only hope to get Picasa running on intel Macs will be to use CodeWeavers CrossOver Office product when it’s released (Intel Macs only).

PowerPC based Mac users will have to try virtualization with Parallels or QEMU, install Windows or Linux, and run it within the virtual machine. This will be a big drain on CPU cycles and memory only to get Picasa running.

I think I’ll wait for a native OS X version of Picasa on my PowerPC Mac Mini. I don’t have a lot of photos on my MacBook so I’ll give the Windows version of Picasa a whirl when CodeWeavers gets CXOffice out the door.

Let me know what you decide to do.
