Overdue Apple iPad 3G Review

by pankaj on August 2, 2010

Apple iPadMy iPad post is seriously overdue. I picked up the iPad 3G on launch day and have been using it for almost 3 months. I am delighted with this wonderful device but I wish it was lighter than it is. The weight of the iPad does make it considerably more difficult to hold for an extended period of time and actually be productive.

The Apple App Store has grown from about 5,000 applications when the iPad 3G was launched to more than 18,000 today. I have over 145 different applications installed on my iPad. Although, I’ll admit that there are only about 40 that I use regularly.

The Apple App Store has more than 18,000 apps for the iPad

More than 18,000 iPad apps

Pros

  • Wonderful crisp, clear screen
  • Simple to use if you’re an iPhone or iPod Touch user
  • Simple to learn if you’re new to the iPad/iPhone platform
  • iPhone apps work well but text gets grainy when using in 2x model
  • iPad apps work wonderfully
  • Everywhere connectivity (3G model and network dependent)
  • Over 6,000 apps specifically written for the iPad
  • Speakers and the mic work really well
  • iPad still isn’t running iOS 4.x. I consider this a Pro because of the bugs and some performance issues I’ve seen in iOS 4.0, though 4.01 is slightly better

Cons

  • Weight – though sleek, the iPad is not light and is uncomfortable to hold for long periods of time
  • Some apps can still be a bit buggy but will undoubtedly improve over time
  • Typing on the iPad can be a bit tough for extended periods, though, it is quite usable for shorter documents
  • Not being able to display ALL applications from the iPad to an external monitor using the Dock to VGA connector. This is a big issue that Apple should address sooner rather than later.

Whether you’re in New Delhi, Mumbai, Tokyo, Hong Kong, Bangkok or New York City, the iPad is really handy when you’re stuck in traffic (as long as someone else is driving – don’t use a device like the iPad while you’re driving). If you’re not sure how you’re going to use the iPad, it might be better off waiting sometime but I’ve found myself using a desktop or laptop less and less except for very long documents or programming. For everything else, my iPad is my lightweight (compared to a laptop), take everywhere computing device.
