Fedora Core 5 Review: – The Linux Information Resource

I got FC5 installed on my Thinkpad T40 (new install) and on my Dell desktop (upgrade). I haven’t had any problems with the installation. I still find it a bit annoying that the Intel Centrino firmware has to be downloaded after the installation. I know it’s done because of licensing issues but it’s still annoying, along with the various multimedia code stuff. Fedora Core is definitely not a distro for people new to Linux. I would suggest Ubuntu or Suse for those that are new to Linux. More of the applications that Windows users are used to can be found out of the box in Ubuntu or Suse. Overall, I’m happy with Fedora Core 5 with the exception of two things

  1. True profile management like scpm under Suse
  2. Hibernating a laptop isn’t as straightforward as it is with Suser

Here’s a nice little review of FC5.
