rBuilder Online – Front Page

rPath has a great idea to allow people to cook up their own Linux distributions using only a browser! However, it is way too painful to work with if you want to use anything outside of the packages already on their platform.

For example, I wanted to build an appliance around the Manusya Project. However, my RPM packages aren’t already on the rPath system. To get my application into rPath, I have to download and install the rPath Linux CDs, install it onto a PC, then rebuild my application using their conary package management system. Once i have the conary packages build I can easily add them to a templated system that I’d like to build and wait till the ISO’s are generated. It would be easier if they offered a VMPlayer compatible image so I could easily get a basic rPath Linux system up and running to build the conary packages.

It would also be nice if they offered a way to convert RPM packages and DEB packages to Conary. Pretty nice concept, it’s just too much pain to create an appliance that uses another packaging system and another flavor of Linux.
