Riya Vs. Google (Neven Vision)

I haven’t been following Riya lately but it is sure going to have it’s hands full with Google’s acquisition of Neven Vision. From Neven Vision’s website, “Neven Vision is primarily focused on the subset of computer vision known as visual sensing, which is the automated extraction of information about objects or scenes in one or more images.”

Neven Vision has biometric and consumer related products and quite a few patents. They have technology which opens up opportunities in mobile marketing and commerce, personal security, and biometric identity verification. It will be very interesting to see what Google does with this technology beyong integrating it into Picasa. It will be even more interesting to see how Riya evolves and finds a niche that will allow them to coexist and compete with Google in the visual sensing space.

Below is an excerpt from the Google Blog.

Official Google Blog: A better way to organize photos?

Neven Vision comes to Google with deep technology and expertise around automatically extracting information from a photo. It could be as simple as detecting whether or not a photo. It could be as simple as detecting whether or not a photo contains a person, or, one day, as complex as recognizing people, places, and objects.
