1/3 SCO Group vs. IBM

Almost 2/3 of the claims that SCO is making against IBM have been thrown out. After repeated requests to show exactly where code was taken from UNIX and put into Linux, SCO has yet to comply. The magistrate found it inexcusable that SCO wasn’t providing all the details. This is very good news indeed. I wonder how this will affect SCO’s cases against corporate Linux users DaimlerChrysler and AutoZone.

SCO Group (nasdaq: SCOX – news – people ), of Lindon, Utah, is suing IBM (nyse: IBM – news – people ), claiming IBM stole code from Unix, for which SCO holds some copyrights, and put it into Linux, which is distributed free. SCO is seeking billions in damages. The case, filed in 2003, is scheduled for trial in 2007. But Wednesday night, in a blistering 39-page ruling, Magistrate Judge Brooke C. Wells of the United States District Court in Utah tossed out two-thirds of SCO’s claims against IBM.

Remix My Life in the Bush of Ghosts

As described on Creative Commons, David Byrne, of The Talking Heads, and Brian Eno have remastered and released My Life in the Bush of Ghosts with two tracks released under Creative Commons.

David Byrne and Brian Eno’s landmark sampling album My Life in the Bush of Ghosts was recently remastered and reissued with extensive liner notes, photos, and previously unreleased bonus tracks. To celebrate the release, Byrne and Eno launched bush-of-ghosts.com where the audio source files from two of the classic tracks from Bush of Ghosts â?? “A Secret Life” and “Help Me Somebody” â?? are offered under the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 2.5 license, so you can (subject to the download terms of use) use them to make remixes. The site allows uploads and user ratings, as well as the ability to share videos you make for music on Bush of Ghosts.

Google Earth for Linux

Yabba-Dabba-Do! Google has finally launched Google Earth for Linux. I have Google Earth for Linux working on a PC running Ubuntu 6.06. Though the machine doesn’t have a 3D video card and it only has 512MB of RAM, Google Earth works surprisingly well. It is great to see Google releast a native Linux version of Google Earth.

Could a native Picasa for Linux or Google Talk for Linux be next?

Download the Mac, Linux and Windows versions of Google Earth here: Google Earth – System Requirements

Flock is awesome!

Flock is awesome!  If you’re a blogger, or love sharing pictures, or reading lots of RSS feeds, or storing your “favorites”/bookmarks online, you must use Flock.  Most importantly, if you want a pretty stable, fast, and widely supported (Flock is built on the most recent Firefox 1.504 codebase) that recovers from crashes really well, you have to use Flock.

Just today, Flock got stuck on a page and threw up a modal dialog box asking if I wanted to continue or stop the script from running.  I couldn’t click “Stop” so I killed the flock process on my Mac Mini.  When I restarted flock, I was asked if I wanted to open up the session that was open during the crash.  I also had the option to open up a previous session.  I selected the current session and Flock opened up ALL of the loaded tabs I had open when the crash occured.  Flock did not open the page that hung Flock.  I’m not sure if this was intended or not.  It is possible that Flock happened not to know that page was open since it may not have rendered properly when I forced the kill.

For a Beta, this browser has been working very very well on Ubuntu, SuSE 10.1, and Apple OS X (it’s Universal Binary).  You can go get it here: Flock â?? The web browser for you and your friends

Bill Gates to focus more on charitable activities and less on Microsoft

The Wall Street Journal reported today that at a press conference, Bill Gates, the richest man in the world, announced that he will be transitioning his daily responsibilities at Microsoft over to Ray Ozzie and Craig Mundie. Ray Ozzie will assume the title of Chief Software Architect immediately. Craig Mundie will assume the title of Chief Research and Strategy Officer. Ray Ozzie and Craig Mundie will continue to work very closely with Bill Gates over the transition period which will be through July 2007. Bill Gates will be retaining the tilte of Chairman of the Board of Microsoft.

After thirty years of running the largest and most dominant force in technology, Bill Gates has decided to spend more of his time focusing on charitable endeavors. Though I am not a fan of Microsoft’s products, I have tremendous respect for the company and all the people who helped build Microsoft into what it is today. I wish Bill Gates the best of luck and success in giving back to society.
